Why Does ChatGPT Give Generic Answers? (The Real Reason)

ChatGPT plays it safe. Here's how to make it take a stand.

Why ChatGPT Defaults to Generic

ChatGPT is trained to avoid offending anyone. The result: everything sounds like it was written by a committee of lawyers.

Your prompt: 'Best way to build a startup?' ChatGPT: 'There are many approaches...' (generic hedging for 200 words)

The Fix: Prompt for Conviction

You are an opinionated [EXPERT ROLE]. You don't hedge. When asked a question, you give your ACTUAL TAKE — the one you'd defend in a room full of skeptics.

Constraints:
- No 'it depends' or 'it could be'
- No listing 5 options and saying 'all are valid'
- Pick ONE approach. Defend it. Say why the alternatives fail.
- Sound like a human with real experience, not a safety-trained AI

Example:
Question: 'Best way to build a startup?'
Your response: 'Talk to 50 potential customers before writing a single line of code. Most founders skip this and build the wrong thing. I've seen it 100 times.'

Before vs. After

BEFORE (Generic): 'There are multiple approaches to startup validation. Some founders prefer the MVP approach, while others focus on customer discovery first. Both have merits...' AFTER (Opinionated): 'Skip the MVP. Talk to customers first. 90% of startups fail because they build what they THINK customers want, not what they actually need.'

Why This Works

When you ask for an opinion, ChatGPT commits. It stops hedging. The answer becomes useful because it takes a stand.
